Many people are now familiar with the phrase "en vino veritas - truth in wine" but for the Filippis' "en vino familia - family in wine" is a truth. This year, 2012 is the Filippi family's 90th Anniversary as winegrowers and now finds fourth generation Joseph "J.P." and his son Jared (age 30, 5th generation), farming 60 plus acres of Zinfandel, Grenache, Mourvedre, Alicante Bouschet, Petite Sirah, Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese, Cabernet Franc and new plantings of Tempranillo in the historic Cucamonga Valley. This valley is recognized as the United States' oldest wine district, and thanks to the Joseph Filippi Winery, in 1995 it was designated as a controlled American Viticultural Area, (AVA for short). In the past the Cucamonga Valley has been famous for its dessert wines, but as technologies improve it is now possible to make a full spectrum of gold medal wines.
We understand good wine is made from good grapes. As stewards of the environment, much attention is paid to viticultural operations where we manage our vineyards by utilizing sustainable farming management practices. We continually strive for the highest quality product with the least amount of negative impact to the land. Grapes are arguably the most environmentally friendly crop known. They consume relatively no water (most vineyards are dry-farmed) they clean the air and consume green-house gasses to produce oxygen. Wineries are able to reclaim water for vineyard use and reduce energy use by applying nutrients through drip-lines. By using no-till methods vineyards can be utilized as landscaping practically anywhere. The city of Rancho Cucamonga has been working closely with the winery to redevelop the valley's viticultural heritage. Consequently it is possible to find new and old vines woven all-throughout town.
Limited production, Joseph Filippi wines are the result of a craftsmanship derived from tradition, passion, skill and artistry. President and director of winemaking, J.P. Filippi has constructed an artisan winemaking team including, winemaker Kristina Filippi and Vice President and cellar master Jared Filippi, along with the esteemed consultation of vintner/enologist, Rene Biane and Dr. Fred S. Nury, Professor Emeritus of Enology at Cal State University of Fresno, (U.C. Davis classmates of J.P.'s father Joseph A.).
The Joseph Filippi Winery is complimented and completed by the tasting-room and banquet rooms, where guests may taste and purchase wines in an Old World ambiance. The Rancho Cucamonga location features a unique gift shop, historical museum, art gallery, picnic grounds, winery tours, and is home to many exclusive wine club events.
